چکیده
Treponema Pallidum, causative agent of syphilis and HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus) co-infection is not uncommon now as both are sexually transmitted and risk factors are the same. Syphilitic ulcers facilitate the transmission of HIV and increase the viral load among HIV positive patients. Studies demonstrated that individuals with sexually transmitted infections (STI) are 35 times more likely to acquire HIV infection, if exposed to the virus through sexual contact (Rolfs RT et al, 1997) On the other hand HIV alters the natural course of syphilis & response to treatment. Incidence of neuro-syphilis is high among ISSN: 2319-7706 Volume 3 Number 5 (2014) pp. 726-730 http://www.ijcmas.com

Syphilis Serology among HIV-Seroreactive Patients
Sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s), including Syphilis, are associated with an increased risk of Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Though Rapid Plasma Reagin test (RPR) is a screening test to diagnose syphilis, a negative RPR may not rule out syphilis in HIV sero-reactive patients. For laboratory confirmation, one specific treponemal test, namely Treponema Pallidum Haemagglutinat...
متن کاملBiological false reactive VDRL test among the HIV-infected patients: A note on its prevalence
Presently, the screening of syphilis is dependent mainly on serological tests. In the sexually transmitted disease clinic, syphilis serology is a basic screening test. The results VDRL test among of 150 HIV (82 males, 68 females) infected, regardless to immune status (CD4+ count), were studied. It was found that in 2 cases, the VDRL was biologically false reactive (VDRL positive, TPHA negative)...

Results These are presented in table 1. Owing to the unavailability of the Treponema pallidum haemagglutination assay (TPHA) reagents at certain times and the inability of some women to aVord the cost of screening, only 30 of the 148 VDRL reactive serum samples were subjected to TPHA, with three being positive. Thus, 10% of the VDRL reactive sera were also TPHA reactive. This TPHA/VDRL ratio is...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The clinical diagnosis of neurosyphilis is very rarely encountered today in the developed world although syphilis remains a significant health problem in few areas of the industrialized countries and in most of the third world nations.
